Aquatic PLants

This page will contain all the plants I have to sell, and will contain links to pictures, as well as guides to caring for each species. I will NOT necessarily keep this page to date with availability so please do not place an order without first contacting me! I will keep a stock list, and can tell you if I have enough available to ship.

Rotala Rotundifolia                         Aquatic Plant Central Info Page

Rotala R. is a well known aquatic plant. It is easy to care for, and even easier to propagate, making it a common choice for beginners. Thriving in medium to high lighting, this is a great choice for most planted aquariums. High light will help to show some of the brighter reds, however in medium light I have found that the tips will show a bright pink/red as they near the surface. Trimming can be done as explained on APC, and rotala’s respond well to top and bottom cuts.

Ludwigia Repens                             Aquatic Plant Central Info Page

L. Repens is another common aquarium plant. Its care is similar to Rotala R. and can be a great way to provide some red accent to a lower tech aquarium. Its broad leaves provide a great background to finer plants such as grasses or Myrio type stem plants. It is propagated in the same ways as Rotala, and is noted to often put up with less than adequate lighting (down to 1.75 watts per gallon). In the photo below the repens is in the left rear.

Hygrophila Difformis                    Aquatic Plant Central Info Page

H. Difformis, or Wisteria, is by far the most forgiving plant I have encountered. This plant is great for any beginner who is looking to see positive results, quickly. With high light, and co2 injection, this plant grows incredibly fast. However these conditions are not required, and the plant will grow in a lower light/lower nutrient environment. I often suggest this plant be placed in a larger aquarium (10 gallons or more) as it can quickly overtake an aquascape.

Ludwigia X Lacustris                     Aquatic Plant Central Info Page

Ludwigia X Lacustris is an exciting and relatively new aquarium plant. This is a rare natural hybrid of L. Brevipes and L. Palustris and can be found in select locations in the wild from Rhode Island to Georgia. Unlike L. Repens, this plant does not grow at a 45 degree angle, and will grow straight up towards the surface, making it a great background candidate. Under high light, co2 and with fertilization this plant will take on a terrific rust color, that looks amazing as a contrast to greener plants. It is noted to be rather adaptable so high light, co2, and fertilization are not all required, but they will result in more color and compact growth. This plant looks best when planted with multiple stems, and can be pruned in the same way as the above plants. In the left photo below recently plants sideshoots are in front of the L. Repens. In the right photo the middle red plant is the l. x Lacustris.

Vallisneria Americana                       Planted Tank Info Page

Jungle Vals are another common aquarium plant. This particular species gets quite large, and without pruning can reach lengths of over 2 feet! Vals spread by runners that each rooted section will send out, and can propagate very quickly in correct conditions. This is certainly a background plant, and I would limit it to 10 gallon tanks and up. The left photo below shows some young vals in a 10g tank, while the right photo shows the background of my 40B full of Vals

I do have rams horn snails, malaysian trumpet snails, and an unknown pond type snail in my tanks. These do not eat plants, and are rarely any problem with buyers. I try and remove all snails, but babies and eggs may be present.

Ludwigia Sp Red                                       Tropica Info Page

This stem plant turns red easier and is smaller than the well-known Ludwigia repens ’Rubin’. Each stem becomes 2-4cm wide and 10-30cm high. The plant willingly creates side shoots, but cutting increases the amount and leaves the plant even closer. The cut-off shoots can be replanted and they quickly generate new roots. The plant becomes intensely red and grows better, when placed in high light and with pressurized CO2.

Myriophyllum Guyana

This myrio is different than most as it has a very small crown that has a width of about half an inch. It tends to grow slower than most Myriophyllums, making it an excellent mid-ground plant These are grown in both medium and high light with co2. Due to its small size, they are great for nano tanks.
